| This website defines the technical terms used by teachers of Scottish Country Dancing and by compilers of Scottish Country Dance instructions. The terms are listed alphabetically as a Dictionary and also logically as shown in the Site map under the following headings: Types of Dance, defined by musical tempo; Footwork, covering the seven main steps used; Hand Positions and other Niceties, mainly concerned with etiquette; Types of Sets, covering the different formats of Longwise sets, Circular sets and Round the room sets within the répertoire; Set Structure, which covers the dancers' roles and their positions within the Set and the directions in which they face or move; Figures, covering the basic movements which are the building blocks of the dances, listed under 32 principal topics, many of which are headings for closely associated pages; Complex Figures, which are more rarely encountered and are often combinations of the basic Figures; and Timing, which covers the number of bars of music required for each Figure in its standard and any alternative form together with considerations of varying the tempo within the Figure. Diagrams, over 100 in all, are used to illustrate many topics.
